MEEKNESS

March 15, 2020

Blessed Are the Meek

Blessed Are the Meek, for they shall inherit the earth!

Matt. 5:5

My mother was a meek woman of integrity. She came from humbled beginnings. She was born with anemia, a heart murmur, and as time progressed, it was evident that she had severe scoliosis. She was very sick as a child and teen, and she had numerous surgeries. Throughout her life, she learned how to trust God.. She wasn't one who talked much, wasn't prone to gossip or self-righteous chatter, but she diligently prayed, encouraged others and cheered people on to success. She had an earnest fear of God and she lived a committed life before her children and amid all who had known her.

To be blessed is to be filled with spiritual joy! It is indicative of those who share in the salvation of the Lord. Oxford Dictionary notes meek as "quiet, gentle, and easily imposed on; a submissive spirit." Meek is a word that illustrates a gentle nature, which is a spiritual fruit (Gal. 5:23). It is characteristic of one who lives a humble and selfless life. Meekness depicts one who surrender's her will to serve another. It is empowered by self-control, another spiritual fruit (Gal. 5:23). My mother prayed knowing that she couldn't change a single individual's life, but by surrendering her will to the Father, He could do more than she could ever describe. Scripture describes Moses as a "very meek" man (Numbers 12:3). He was chosen by God to confront Pharaoh and lead God's people from the hands of the Egyptians (Exodus 2). Moses acknowledged his weaknesses before the Lord (Ex. 4:10). However, God assured him that He would send a helper, Aaron the Levite (Ex. 7:1), and He would protect him (Ex. 3:14).

Matthew 5:5 says that the meek will "inherit the earth." If one is to "inherit the earth," they will be filled with joy and contentment, despite their circumstances. When one is meek, she completely trusts the Lord in all things. She is concerned about the welfare of others. She does whatever is necessary to provide, protect, and encourage one who is in need. When one is meek, she has hope and looks forward to the future kingdom, realizing that earth is not her home (Phil. 3:20). She points the finger to Jesus Christ, and gently walks one by the hand.

Yes, my mother was meek. She inherited the earth, and I feel blessed to have been under her care for twenty-eight extraordinary years!

Lord, help us to feel the blessings of being meek. Help us to meditate on your Word and understand your gentleness to us. Help us to humble ourselves before you. Thank you Lord for those mothers and fathers who have exhibited the characteristics of meekness. Thank you Lord for Jesus, Amen.

Encourage and Be Encouraged!
